Question ID: 44458
Who manufactures a capacitive type pressure sensor found in consumer
blood pressure monitors with the part number 3S5Y1. Other markings on
the sensor include PPS which is presumably the manufacturers initials.
Photographs of the sensor in various states of assembly can be found
at "http://www.kliese.wattle.id.au/~russell/sensor/pictures.html".
Note that these pictures do not include the metal shielding which
covers the whole assembly.

I require contact details for the manufacturer.

This sensor is part of a consumer grade blood pressure sensor with the
OMRON brand. I am interested in using this sensor in a similar
application because of it's ease of interface and it's apparent low
cost.

Kliese,

Pardon me for asking the obvious, but have you contacted OMRON
directly?

In addition to their blood pressure monitors
(http://www.omronhealthcare.com/digbloodpressure/bloodpressure.html),
OMRON has an electronic components division
(http://www.omron.com/ecb/index.html) which manufactures a wide
variety of small electronic sensors, including capacitive pressure
sensors.

One example is their "metallic diaphragm pressure sensor" which is
smaller than your "3S5Y1", but its overall design and configuration is
similar:

Compare it to your sensor shown at:

Here is contact information for OMRON offices in the United States:

OMRON Electronics LLC

http://oeiweb.omron.com/oei/

And here is contact information for all OMRON offices worldwide:

Contacting OMRON
http://www.omron.com/about_omron/address.html

They also have an information request form online at:

OMRON

http://www.omron.com/information.html

If OMRON is the manufacturer of the "3S5Y1" pressure sensor in their
consumer blood pressure monitor, please let me know and I will repost
this clarification request as an Answer.

Thank you,
Huntsman

P.S. - the acronym "PPS" may also refer to "pneumatic pressure
sensor".

No, I haven't contacted OMRON. I will contact them and find out if
they are (or were) the manufacturer.

Kliese,

Have you been able to find out anything from OMRON?

I have not yet been successful in tracking down the component from
Omron. They have been giving me the run-around. I'm currently waiting
reply from a fax I sent to the Singapore electronic components
division.

I have contacted OMRON and they don't seem to be able to help me
source this sensor. They possibly did manufacture this sensor at some
point in time. It looks like I'll have to make use of the silicon
micro-machined sensors which are much more redily available (although
more expensive).

Thanks to all who provided input relating to this question.

I am searching for this gadget and am awaiting feedback from a source.
How did you come by it and is it just the sensor that you require for
an alternate use?

The components are fabricated from chemically resistant PPS. The
sensors are available in pressure ranges from 0 to 150 psi. The
MPXV50GC6U model is recommended for use in blood pressure equipment.
