I know several motivational speakers who take audiences through something generally called "The Dickens Process" in which audiences / delegates are taken in thir mind to their point of death, having not achieved what they wanted to in thir lives. The facilitator emphasises the failure and regret and then brings people back to the present day - the whole exercise designed as a very powerrful process to give people leverage to take action. My question is this - is this process in the public domain, and how can I access sample srcipts for this, and perhaps other guided visualisation processes, that as a Coach I can use to help others? | |

dtnl42, I believe ?The Dickens Process? may have originated from a motivational speaker by the name of Keith Ellis. In his book ?The Magic Lamp? (1), published in 1998 he likens a personal experience to Charles Dickens character ?Scrooge? (from the story ?A Christmas Carol?). From his website (2) he says: ?When I was a senior in college, I decided that I was going to become a writer. But for the next dozen years I barely wrote a thing. One afternoon while I was sitting at my desk daydreaming, I had one of those life-changing revelations that comes out of nowhere and takes a baseball bat to the side of your head: ?If you had decided to write a couple of sentences a day twelve years ago, by now you would have completed half-a-dozen books.? I was stunned. In a single pathetic moment I realized just how much time I had wasted, and how easily I could have prevented it. It was as if twelve years of my life had just floated by without me, while I stood on the shore and watched. All because I didn't have the brains to write a couple of sentences a day. What kind of an idiot was I? Before I could answer that, a new thought presented itself, shining like a sunbeam punching it's way through a thundercloud: ?You're missing the point. This is a wake-up call, not Judgment Day.? Suddenly, I got it. I finally understood what the world was trying to beat into my head. The purpose of being alive is not to grieve over a wasted past, but to make certain you don't waste the future. I had been shown failure so that I could learn from it and turn it into success. All I had to do was to write a couple of sentences a day from that point on, and my dreams of being a writer would come true. Hallelujah! I had been handed one of the great secrets of the universe. I was delighted, elated, and overjoyed. I was also terrified. What if I couldn't change? What if I couldn't muster even the minimal effort necessary to write a sentence or two a day? I'd never been able to do it before; what made me I think I could do it now? As if on cue, my thoughts leaped twelve years into the future. There I could see myself wringing my hands in frustration because I still hadn't written a thing. I was miserable, a wretched failure, accused and tormented by regret. I knew I would remain a failure until my dying day. I knew I would live without joy, without reward, without happiness, without... That did it. I'd had enough. I was a changed man. As surely as I knew my own name, I knew I would never let that kind of future take place. Like Scrooge on Christmas morning, I had seen the Ghost of Things Yet To Come, and he had scared the daylights out of me. I had been given a second chance, and I would make the most of it. I knew that the next twelve years would see a very different me from the twelve years just passed. And they did. I became a writer, just as I had hoped. More importantly, I learned one of the most important lessons of my life: We are all wise in hindsight; the secret to making our dreams come true is to turn hindsight into foresight. So use your past to empower your future. Begin today what you regret not having done yesterday, and you will avoid that regret tomorrow. Just ask Mr. Scrooge.? Putting my conjecture aside, it is irrelevant whether the process is in ?the public domain? or not. An idea in and of itself is not subject to copyright however its expression is. You are free to purchase the book, read it and then author (i.e. create in a literary sense, with due effort shown to meet copyright guidelines (3)) a script encompassing the talked about ideas (attributing the source is appropriate, but not legally necessary). As my time is limited at the moment, the other parts of your question I leave open (RESEARCHERS & COMMENTORS WELCOME), but I intend to return and address the outstanding items (excluding ?other guided visualisation processes? which is to broad a subject, unless references arise from my specified research outline). P.S. Mr Ellis may (through his website) be able to provide you with necessary themed scripts from his seminars, when you explain how much you loved his book and how poorly they pay a coach such as you, in such a small school. Compliments and asking nicely is both polite and free, so I would suggest an email (can get address from website below). Hello dtnl42-ga, Since the "Dickens Process" is used in proprietary seminars and workshops I doubt that it would be available in the public domain from these workshop vendors. It is fairly easy to write a script for a guided visualization to help review your life. It might be easier for you to write your own. The most challenging issue is what you do with the material that comes up for the participants. You say you're a Coach and want to use guided visualizations in your practice. It might be easier for a Researcher to find a class or workshop that will teach you how to develop and use your own guided visualizations. Good luck. ~ czh ~ http://www.anthonyrobbins.com/community/showthread.php?s=5b484efa1669507e5a8b9dce0d3e348f&postid=95380 The Dickens process is actually done during UPW on Sunday afternoon not at DWD. It is a very powerful process and people have changed there lives because of this. I have participated in two Dickens and was on crew for 10 others. |

dtnl42, With my previous comment made (email Keith Ellis and ask) you will find a wealth of material at http://www.keithellis.com/bootarchv.html that is basically already in script form, or easily convertible to such. I remain confident that ?The Dickens Process? is sourced from this man (i.e. the name, not necessarily the concepts) but feel the process (described as ?delegates are taken in their mind to their point of death?) has been enlarged upon by others. As your question emphasises ?visualisations? (with which Mr Ellis agrees with, but from my reading, only as part of a larger process) it is necessary for me to complete further research, centred on visualisation techniques and (reluctantly) others using such. The remainder of this post may be viewed at you discretion (excepting reference 4, as it acknowledges the materials he bases his work upon and may be of use, in reaching your goal) concentrating on the bibliographical aspects of the motivator?s life, with additional references. From http://www.keithellis.com/author.html ?Keith Ellis is a nationally known speaker, author, columnist, and management consultant whose unique insights about leadership, goal setting, communication, and time management have made him a guest on talk shows across the country. For twenty-five years, he has studied the art and science of human achievement. After graduating magna cum laude (1) from Georgetown University, he became a record-breaking salesperson in the computer industry (2), then worked his way into senior management. In the process, he devoured every book, magazine, and audio tape he could find about success and human potential, and attended the leading seminars and lectures. At the age of 28 (3), Mr. Ellis became the Chief Marketing Officer for a multimillion-dollar computer company. At 34, he became President of his own training company, where he created the nationally acclaimed management training seminar, ?The Science of Persuasion: How to Maximize Your Influence Without Minimizing Your Integrity?. Today, he is President of Keith Ellis Seminars, a firm that specializes in training and consulting on state-of-the-art strategies for peak performance. Mr. Ellis is the author of an exciting new book called ?The Magic Lamp: Goal Setting for People Who Hate Setting Goals?(4). He is also the author of BOOTSTRAPS the first monthly column on the World Wide Web devoted to self-help and self-improvement. His unique Web site is visited 35,000 times a month from around the world. For his pioneering writing, teaching, consulting, and leadership in the field of peak performance for people and organizations, Mr. Ellis has been listed in both ?Who's Who In American Business? and ?Who's Who In Media and Communications.? Notes (1) ?Top Ten %?3.64(on the 4.00scale)? http://www.law.georgetown.edu/registrar/honors.html (2) ?Blueridge Technologies?Vice President? as at 1996 (now trading as Mindwrap Inc (http://www.mindwrap.com/news/annotations.html)). Cross-reference with ?comments about Keith Ellis?, http://www.keithellis.com/speaking.comments.html ? ?In 1990, I drove all the way from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia to Boston, Massachusetts, to see Keith Ellis speak. He is the best person in front of a group I have ever seen?bar none. If you have an opportunity to book Keith Ellis as a speaker, I strongly recommend that you do so.? ?Craig Landrum, Co-founder and Chief Technologist, Blueridge Technologies? This statement strongly implies that Blueridge Technologies was the company that Mr Ellis had worked for. (Commenter Note: Mr Landrum?s comments are stated in a manner that implies that no relationship had existed between Mr Ellis and himself. If this is correct what value can be applied to the other recommendations?) I assume it is an earlier title of the latter work ?The Magic Lamp: Goal Setting for People who Hate Setting Goals?). *Scripting attributed to Keith Ellis but not confirmed http://groups.google.com.au/groups?q=%22keith+ellis%22&hl=en&lr=&scoring=r&selm=3969BBBA.57D7%40bellsouth.net&rnum=3 Kind regards, gfmaster |

dtnl42, As my last post was prepared prior to researcher ?czh? unlocking your question I sent it anyway. The term ?dynamite? can certainly be applied to your intentions and I choose to withdraw my offer of further assistance, in light of your clarifying answer posted 19 Dec 2004 at 23:53 PST. Kind regards, gfmaster |
