Hi,

4 + 4 = 8

You can find an online calculator here at

It depends what base you're in.
4 + 4 does in fact = 8 for base 9 math and above, but for lower bases
you'll get different results! For example, 4 + 4 in base 6 = 12.

Have a look at: http://www.cut-the-knot.com/blue/SysTable.shtml for an
in depth discussion on mathematics in different bases.

:-) True enough,

But 8 in base 6 also equals 12. So in "simple" math, 4 + 4 = 8 .. even
if your 4's are really, really big.

Thanks fj for the comment.

Since this is listed under "Business and Money" instead of "Science >
Math", I think the answer is much more complicated than just "8". I
think some accounting firms/businesses would easily have come up with
at least "12" as an answer.

Just consider the results of just "1 + 1":
"ENRON VENTURE CAPITALISM: You have two cows. You sell three of them
to your publicly-listed company, using letters of credit opened by
your brother-in-law at the bank, then execute a debt/equity swap with
an associated general offer so that you get all four cows back, with a
tax exemption for five cows. The milk rights of the six cows are
transferred via an intermediary to a Cayman Island company secretly
owned by the majority shareholder who sells the rights to all seven
cows back to your listed company. The annual report says the company
owns eight cows, with an option on one more and has no liabilities.
The report's audit opinion page has been torn out."

How much is 4 + 4?

In this case, 4 + 4 is $2.00 plus a non-refundable listing fee of $0.50.
