Hi, I have a Dell inspiron 5100, OS is MS windows XP home version 2002. I need to go in and delete all those unneeded temp files that are taking up space and slowing down the system. I forgot how to get to them to delete them. | |

another easy way to do this is to go to the start menu, choose "run", and in the little box that pops up, type "cleanmgr" (without the quotation marks). This brings up the disk cleanup utility, which will think for a few moments to figure out how much stuff it can safely remove, and then will give you a choice of what types of temporary files to delete (including all your temporary internet files if you so wish). try it - it's always worked really well for me :-) |

Hankynyc, the best way I would recommend is just goto "Start", then under "Programs", goto "Accesories, then "System Utilities", and then run "Disk Cleanup". I also recommend using the "Disk Defragment" utility at least once a month to help your computer stay somewhat smooth running. Think of it this way, you have a big filing cabinent. All the files are not organized in any fashion. So it will take forever to find the file your looking for. You also never throw away any files from the cabinent either. So you really take a while to find the paticular file your looking for. What better way to ease your troubles than to go through your filing cabinent and throw away any old unneeded files and organize the rest? Well the computers hard drive(the filing cabinent) is pretty well the same way. Your computer can really decrease in speed if you have files disorganized and what not. Your computer gets more and more files collected up in it every time you surf the web, download something, or just anytime you get something off of an outside source put on your computer. Disk Defragment goes through and organizes everything automatically for you in a sense. You wont be able to really see anything organized for you, but underneath everything it has been. It can really help the speed of your computer. Just run disk cleanup and then afterwards run disk defragment. I cant really stress enough how much it helps to do this. Not enough people do do this. If you really want to be picky or just have some money laying around, pick up System Mechanic. They usually have it at your local Walmart or wherever else. It does every little system maintenence and tweak there is pretty much. Hopefully this has helped you. Good Luck!!! |

Using Disk Cleanup Disk Cleanup helps free up space on your hard drive Disk Cleanup searches your drive, and then shows you temporary files, Internet cache files, and unnecessary program files that you can safely delete. You can direct Disk Cleanup to delete some or all of those files. Open Disk Cleanup Note ? To open Disk Cleanup, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup. |
