Question ID: 444922
My father is searching for the title of a black and white movie.
Beginning plot is as follows...man exits (possibly) a bar or
restaurant, gets struck by a vehicle and dies. The angel of death or
an angel (in a human body form) comes to take him away, however the
man tells the angel that he's not ready to leave because he's worried
about his girlfriend. The angel allows him to stay temporarily and
stays with him. The angel and the man are involved in at least one
party, possibly at the man's home.

Approximately what year did your father see this movie? Any additional
information you can provide may help in this search. Thanks.

Best regards,
Rainbow

My father saw the beginning of this movie within the last two years on
T.V. The only other possible clue he has is that he thought Jack
Warden was in it, but he couldn't find a movie with Jack Warden in it
that fit the description. Thanks!

Does this sound like the movie? (starring Jack Warden)

"Joe Pendleton is a quarterback preparing to lead his team to the
superbowl when he is almost killed in an accident. An overanxious
angel plucks him to heaven only to discover that he wasn't ready to
die, and that his body has been cremated. A new body must be found,
and that of a recently murdered millionaire is chosen. His wife and
accountant, the murderers, are confused by this development, as he
buys the L.A. Rams in order to once again quarterback them into the
Superbowl."

Looking forward to your clarification.

My father was specific that the man had indeed died, the reason he
stayed behind was because he didn't know what would become of his
girlfriend, and that the angel allowed him to remain until he got his
affairs in order. I will, however, find and take this movie to him to
make sure.

Spoke with my father.
He has the movie you suggested and it's not the one. He remembered a
little more information about the movie he's searching for. The man
in fact dies. He "wakes up" on an operating table where a soul
collector has come to take him away. He tells the soul collector he's
not ready to go because he hasn't said goodbye to his girlfriend. I
hope this added info helps. As I said before, he only thought that
Jack Warden might have been in it, but he wasn't sure. Even I want to
find this movie because he's been searching for it for so long! :-)
Thanks.

Okay this is a shot in the dark but maybe your father is thinking of
the movie "Meet Joe Black" (1998) starring Brad Pitt?

It starts off with a violent accident scene in which the character
dies, I'm not sure if the story matches the one your father is talking
about and it is relatively new as well, but this is the plot in brief:

Bill Parrish, media tycoon, loving father and still a human being, is
about to celebrate his 65th birthday. One morning, he is contacted by
the Inevitable - by hallucination, as he thinks. Later, Death itself
enters his home and his life, personified in a man's body: Joe Black
has arrived. His intention was to take Bill with him, but
accidentally, Joe's former host and Bills beautiful daughter Susan
have already met. Joe begins to develop certain interest in life on
earth as well as in Susan, who has no clue who she's flirting with.

Just a long shot as many points are inconsistent but, it's not A
Matter of Life and Death the Powell and Pressburger film from 1946 is
it? I believe it is sometimes known as Stairway to Heaven in the US.
It has scenes in both B&W and colour. David Niven falls in love after
a bungle by the angel who is to take him to heaven. There is a scene
where Niven's character is operated on. Great film, I love Powell &
Pressburger.

My father and I have seen "Meet Joe Black." I'm sure that's not the
movie. It was definitely an older film.

My father and I have also both seen "Stairway to Heaven." A great
film, but not the one he's searching for. The emergency room/hospital
room scene is at the beginning of the movie. This is where the
angel/soul collector converses with the man who was hit by the vehicle
after exiting a bar or restaurant, and this is where the man pleads
with the angel that he needs to set things straight with his
girlfriend or say goodbye to her properly. The angel/soul collector
then remains with the man. The angel is present at a party of some
sort at a later point in time. That's about all we have to go on.
