I need to know how to obtain all (or most) of the stock holdings of all (or most) U.S. mutual funds. Historical data would be nice, but is not necessary. I would prefer not to spend $10,000 to subscribe to a proprietary database. Possible answers: 1) Website xxx has the information, but not in database form (that's ok, I can spider the site to scrape the info, as long as its not in PDF form.) Excluded answers: 2) Thompson Financial has a historical database containing exactly that information (I have already found this, but am looking for less expensive solutions.) 3) Morningstar has the top 10 holdings (exception: if you can tell me how to get the rest of the holdings from Morningstar.) |

A quick (unofficial) way is to run onto EDGAR (www.sec.gov) and look at form N-PX filings for a specific fund. it should show how it voted each share the fund owns. Over a year, pretty much every securities it held should have had a vote of some sort. |

This is easy. Download the free trial software at http://www.fasttrack.net. It lists all mutual funds, and links to the top 25-holdings. Click a single "Make a Family" button on the FastTrack Internet Tab and the ticker symbols of the holdings are placed in a list. You can have FastTrack display an average of the holdings and compare it to the funds. In most cases you will find the to 5-10 holdings define the performance of the fund to better than 90% correlation. All this takes place at high speed as the free trial includs 20 years of daily dividend-adjusted data for funds and stocks. |
