Is marijuana addictive?

Dear Quickhelp,

Here's what the Student Services at Brown University have to say on the matter:

"No one would argue that marijuana is as addictive as alcohol or
cocaine. However, it's wrong to say that it is not at all addictive.
More and more studies are finding that marijuana has addictive
properties. Both animal and human studies show physical and
psychological withdrawal symptoms from marijuana, including
irritability, restlessness, insomnia, nausea and intense dreams.
Tolerance to marijuana also builds up rapidly. Heavy users need 8
times higher doses to get the same effects as infrequent users.

For a small percentage of people who use it, marijuana can be highly
addictive. It is estimated that 10% to 14% of users will become
heavily dependent. More than 120,000 people in the US seek treatment
for marijuana addiction every year. Because the consequences of
marijuana use can be subtle and insidious, it is more difficult to
recognize signs of addiction. Cultural and societal beliefs that
marijuana cannot be addictive make it less likely for people to seek
help or to get support for quitting."

I hope this answers your question. Please contact me if you need any
clarification on this answer before you rate it. My search term was
simply: [Is marijuana addictive?]. However, I'd like to note that most
of the top results are associated with Narconon, a Scientology-related
organisation that treats drug-addicts and that seems to promote the
idea that Marijuana *is* addictive.

Can you stop anytime you want? Try to stop and see.
Although maybe not physically addictive it can be psychologically addictive.

I've been smoking 2o years and ain't addicted.............just kidding.
Having smoked it, and being around people who had smoked it for several years.
I can say that a person does not suffer anything physically when
without it, there is a mental wanting for the sensations associated
with smoking it. It DOES lead to using other drugs which are
addictive (as could alcohol)! So don't use it and if you are around
people who do use it, it would be in your own best interest to get
friends who don't. It is a very slow fall, so slow in fact that you
won't even notice it. This is the truth, don't believe anything
contrary.
Now that being said. It does have legitimate uses kemo, glaucoma,
arthritis, pains, etc....it needs to be legalized and regulated for
medical purposes.

(I have not had any for 10 years now and don't miss it!)
I hope you stay drug free and encourage others to be
