Think about the following hypothetical case or a similar real-life
situation you care about.
Each of us has a boss or a client to serve. Your position or real
designation at work is not relevant to this
exercise as long as you understand that your current role is to serve.
You could be a manager, an executive secretary, an executive
assistant, an engineer, a team leader, a consultant or a scientist.
Assume a client calls you to undertake an assignment. The client can
be a decision-maker within your organization or elsewhere. The first
meeting is about to take place. It will be brief. Over the phone, the
client shared with you the following objectives:
"Evaluate the performance of entity x."
The subject of your evaluation (entity X) may be a filing system, a
new product, a policy (open-door policy, after-hours customer service,
fire prevention), a project, or even an individual.
What questions should you ask the boss or client during the first and
second meetings?
Think of developing a template, or a protocol of questions, that would
guide you each time you are meeting a client, or your boss, to
undertake a new assignment.
