I need a list of about 1,000 persons who left a significant mark on
Europe in the 20th century in various fields - politics, military,
science, literature, cinema, art, music of all sorts, sports, business
and others. Whhere and how do I find it?

Wikipedia has a list, by country, of famous people. For instance this
is the page for Austria.

The individuals? names in blue each have their own entry on Wikipedia.
The problem with this list is it is difficult to identify the relevant
dates. Some countries have links to some pages which have been listed
by topic and date, for instance: Austrian scientists.

The site also has Time Magazine?s 100 most influential people of the 20th century.

If it's going to be as many as a thousand, I think some of the "marks"
may be rather faint - even on their own countries, let alone the whole
continent of Europe.
