Is there a law or rule that determines who can send a package to an inmate of a prison? If a company, just in the normal course of doing business, tries to ship something to an inmate (let us say a relative purchased a gift for an inmate and had it sent directly to him or her), does the company have to get special permission from each prison it ships to? Or perhaps each state prison system? Or from the federal government? It seems that at least some individual prisons have lists of approved shippers, and will not allow packages from others in. Is that a common practice? Any info would be appreciated. |

lisava, EACH PRISON has their own rules and regulations as to what is accepted for prisoners. Much of that depends on the security level of the prison you are sending to. Here's a page that lists items that are accepted at most prisons: Gift Idwas for Prisoners http://www.thepamperedprisoner.com/gift.htm There is some good information at the link provided by brockdnoland: Shipping to Prisons: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/browse/-/468634/103-7799697-1773430 Keep in mind, some prisons won't accept ANY packages for prisoners. reference: Read the section on mail. http://www.co.orange.tx.us/Sheriff/secricescorr_copy(1).htm Here's a directory of Prisons, nationwide, so you will have a place to start if you wish to contact prisons before shipping items. List of Prisons by State http://www.corrections.com/links/viewlinks.asp?Cat=5 Click on the state to get a list of prisons in that state. If you wish to scan them in a list, go here: List of Prisons http://www.ourgardenofcarmel.org/adoptaprison.html (Prisons are not linked) Families in New York State have this cool site to send only "approved items" to inmates: Prison Packages http://www.prisonpackages.biz New York also has a "Prisoner Assistance Center" that details on their "Inmate Packages" page what is ok to send: What you can send in a package: http://www.prisonerassistance.org If you want to research each state, a Google Search like this: "Inmate packages" ...brings up 192 results, including many different states' regulations. I hope this helps. If I can be of further assistance, please don't hesitate to ask via the "Request For Clarification" feature. ~~Cynthia Search terms used at Google: shipping prison packages |

Hi... I'm not a Researcher, but I have worked in prisons. One thing the staff WILL do is open your letter or gift before giving it to the prisoner. That's the law. Steph53 |
