Why would the difference in the longest day be one hour and 46 minutes when Wick, Scotland is only about 300 miles farther North than Taunton, England? The Wick daylight includes some twilight perhaps? Neil |

It's 670 miles by road between Taunton and Wick, but remember that Wick especially is at quite a northern latitude - 58 deg N, which is the same lat as Churchill in Canada, and to the north of Toronto (43 N) and Vancouver (49 N). Because of the angle of the earth to the sun, there is a bigger difference than there is nearer the equator (eg most of the USA). In the north of Scotland, like in Scandinavia "land of the midnight sun" the sun does not set until nearly midnight. Owain |

Hey neilzero, Wick is over 500 miles by latitude North of Taunton (Zoomerzet), is it not? 670 by road as owain says, though it feels like a hell of a lot longer! Plus there is the curve of the Earth which enhances the effect. In fact, so great is the curve at the top of Bonnie Scotland that you can?t stand straight up -- or is that the wind? Best |

The falling-forward effect of the whisky is cancelled out by the blown-over-backward effect of the wind. |
