Question ID: 44649
I saw a film round 12 years ago on TV in gernmany. The film was french
or italian. It was about a guy who was working in a small hotel at the
reception in Rome. As a hobby he is playing this kind of billard game
with just 3 balls (1 red ball and 2 white balls or the other way
round) He has a billard tabl in his flat. There is a girl who is
living next to him with whom he is falling in love.
After that he wants to get to a contest of billard players in another
italian city. In this contest, i think, he is playing the final but is
not winning.

Can you tell me what is the Name of the film in english, german or
even italian?

Dear joho123,

Based on what pinkfreud found out, I did some further research for
plot summaries of "Io, Chiara e lo Scuro", to see whether certain
details match what you described from your memory.

In the Italian online movie database mymovies.it, I located the
following synopsis of the film:

"Francisco, a hotel porter, is a skillful billiards player of who gets
in trouble when because of the continuous lost challenges with the
billiards champion "Scuro", he is forced to steal money from the
hotel's safe deposit box. He is fortunate when Chiara enters his
life, a beautiful saxophonist, who will help him returning the stolen
money."

This proves that the main character is indeed a hotel employee, just
as you remember.

KataWeb Cinema, another Italian film database, says among other things
this about the plot:

"A hotel porter, who is a passionate billiard player, and a beautiful
female saxophonist live in the same house, but don't know each other.
A mix-up of briefcases brings the two together."

This shows that they are really neighbours, which meets your
remembrance.

Here we have a summary from the Italian web site, Gnomiz, in a short
article on Francesco Nuti, who plays the billiard-playing porter:

"The diurnal porter of a roman residence cultivates two passions:
Billiard and the love for a young female saxophonist."

So the hotel where the man works is really located in Rome.

Finally, this is what I discovered in the German movie database
Tiscali Moviline:

"Franceso, a fanatic billiard player, loses a huge amount of money in
a revenge game against the famous player 'Scuro', the 'Dark One'. When
his debts grow more and more, he happens to meet Chiara, who works as
a saxophonist in a night club to pay her music studies. Chiara
proposes he should participate in the international billiard
championship, since the winner will get 15 million lire."

So we know now that he really takes part in a big billiard contest
after he had met Chiara. By the way, the German name of the movie is
"Revanche".

This should be the final proof that "Io, Chiara e lo Scuro" is the
film you have seen years ago on German television. It would be a very
astonishing coincedence if some other movie had all these features,
too.

Could you be thinking of the Italian film "Io, Chiara e lo Scuro,"
whose English title is "The Pool Hustlers?"

http://www.italianonline.net/cinema/index2.htm

An excerpt from the site linked above:

THE POOL HUSTLERS

1983. 101 minutes. In Italian with English subtitles. Comedy
Melodrama. Pool Hustlers. Billiards. Italian Cinema. Directed by
Maurizio Ponzi.

Franceso Nuti plays Franceso Piccioli, a young amateur billiards
player whose dream is to play and beat the best pool player in Italy.
Problem is that, brilliant a player as he is, he can’t win when he is
challenged for money. Piccioli is a naïve, good-natured Tuscan who
finds himself in over his head when, to get matches with the best
players he has to play for money. To add to his troubles, he falls in
love with a beautiful saxophonist who won’t give him the time of day.
This film’s obvious antecedents are in American films like The Hustler
and The Color of Money. The film is a sweetly comic tale about a guy
whose little ambitions almost swallow him up. Francesco Nuti gives a
funny, charming performance and as the girl of his dreams, Guiliana de
Sio is lovely. The smooth jazzy score is nice too. The film doesn’t
have much dramatic energy, but it’s not unpleasant viewing.

joho123-ga,

If this is indeed the right film, and if you enjoyed it, you may also
be interested in its sequel, "Casablanca, Casablanca," which features
the same characters in another billiards-related story.
