Hello.

The movie was "Gosford Park." The star was Maggie Smith (playing a
character named "Constance").

"One of the guests is Ivor Novello (Jeremy Northam), who takes a
chiding from Maggie Smith's (who steals every scene she's in and ought
to be on her way to an Oscar for the film) character over what a bomb
his latest film, The Lodger was (and it was)."

From Amazon.com:

"Constance: Tell me, how longer are you going to go on making films?
Ivor Novello: I suppose that rather depends on how much longer the
public want to see me in them.
Constance: It must be hard to know when it's time to throw in the
towel... What a pity about that last one of yours... what was it
called? "The Dodger"?
Ivor Novello: The Lodger.
Constance: Oh. It must be so disappointing when something just *flops* like that."

' In one memorable exchange, the dowager Countess, played with
delectable snideness by Maggie Smith, makes a show of her contempt for
celebrity. "Tell me," she asks, "how much longer do you think you can
go on making films?"
"Well, I suppose that rather depends on how much longer the public
wants to see me in them."
"It must be hard to know when to throw in the towel," she responds,
dripping with solicitude. "What a pity about that last one of yours.
What was it called? The Dodger!"
"The Lodger.
"The Lodger. It must be so disappointing when something just . . .
flops like that."'

search strategy:
"latest film the lodger"
pity "maggie smith" "the lodger"

I hope this helps.
