When windows Me starts in the normal mode, my logitech usb mouse does
not work. Through the interactive loading (via configuration utility
of the operating system), if I choose "no' for msmouse.vxd, windows
seems to load all programs and drivers but the mouse does not work. If
I choose "yes" to msmouse.vxd, step by step process stops and among
other things, windows does not load network related drivers that I
need to access internet through cable modem.
Earlier, through interactive loading I also recognized that
vsdata95.vxd was also creating problems in loading windows fully.
Through a frustrating internet reserach (imagine being on Internet
with only a keyboard handy)I figured that zone alarm may be the cause
for the bad behavior of vsdata95.vxd. I removed the zone alarm, and
vsdata95.vxd seems to be loading successfuly without interference to
windows loading process.
Trying to deal with the above two, I reinstalled (not a clean install)
the windows me. I also had the problem of my display settings
completely changed(even before removing zone alarm) and only the
minimum number(Is it 16?) of colors and minimum resolution available
in my windows settings. With the update(reinstalled nvidia driver from
dell-resource Cd) of Nvidia driver, that problem seems to disappear.
But it comes back whenever msmouse.vxd is loaded in the normal
process.
I bought norton systemworks and ran everything to get the windows
function normally and particularly have both a working mouse and
internet but did not have much success except cleaning a few messes
that I may have created in troubleshooting/reinstalling windows.
I have updated msmouse.vxd file by installing microsoft intellimouse
driver still the problem remains. I have tried changing IRQ settings
too. Even after removing zone alarm, its execute file is still loaded
(visible in software environment). Other problems include, windows
taking time to load and shutdown and in between as I hear whizzing
sound of the hard drive intensely working. I am mentioning these
problems as they may be related or may indicate spyware or trojan.
Please advise and if additional info is needed such as boot text file
system info etc. (right now with having only keyboard and system
resources tight, it is hard for me to cut and paste) I will provide.
By the way i have a dell dimension 8100, 1.4 mega hetz,
256 rombus (rhombus?) memory, 80 gigabyte hd drive etc.
PS: I never found windows Me to be good. I am thinking of upgrading to
xp and will probably add more memory; will that be a motherload of
fixes for all these problems? |
