Bryan,
Scriptor and Poli-guru don't seem to want to get involved, which I well respect.
I didn't see the film, want to see it or feel obligated to see it, as
some Germans did, who felt they should as part of coming to grips with
that period of German history.
I quite agree with the commentaries as presented in this Wikipedia link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Der_Untergang

The German Wikipedia article is more extensive and the critic more
differentiated, as could be expected.

(One of the pleasures of being a mere commenter is that one doesn't
have the answer the question. :)

Cheers and regards, Myo

probonopublico-ga: No, the film is not factually accurate. What movie
is? It is, however, a magnificent drama, beautifully acted and
photographed. The most wrenching scene, wherein Magda Goebbels poisons
her children, is not accurate. Her children were poisoned by the
attending doctor, not her. (Assuming that version is factual.)
Nonetheless, by altering the facts, the director created a stunning
impact. Art conquers truth.
Nonetheless, IMHO, this movie is so riveting and so perfectly
executed that it deserves top honors. It is interesting that such a
niche movie ranks high in the IMDb rankings. In other words, a
masterpiece.
