there are MANY windows-based share-ware and even free  programs which
join .mpg and .wmv video clips. Is there one for macintosh OS X ?

Check out MediaPipe

It's a complicated program, but I think it will do waht you are asking

Just use iMovie. It should have come wit your mac, or you could buy it
with iLife 2004 off of http://www.apple.com/

i presume you're looking for a good file segment joining program that
will concatenate large files with .001 through .00n extensions. see
