I have a 1996 Jeep Cherokee with 60K miles on it, it has the
six-cylinder 4.0 liter engine. When it is warmed up, the automatic
transmission sometimes hesitates slightly before shifting into gear
when I move the lever. It doesn't seem to be slipping at all, and it
works fine while driving. Just a brief lag and then a clunk as it
goes into gear. Does this indicate anything serious?

As I should have mentined before, I had the transmission fluid changed
when I bought the car (last August, about 6K miles ago). It does the
hesitation and then slightly clunky shift intermittently, so given the
comments so far, maybe I should just keep an eye on it and see if it
worsens. I also appreciate the idea of getting two diagnostic
transmission tests, rhater than just from one shop.

If you haven't already, check your fluid level. With the mileage I
would doubt the clutches are bad, but a low fluid level would speed
their deterioration. Have you towed with the vehicle? This creates
heat that can speed up deterioration as well.

Most likely, you are due for a transmission service that will include
replacing all fluids and the filter. Should only run you between $60
and $100. Mopar recommends this service every 30K miles.

A clunk could be the u-joint going bad. Go to drive and reverse a few
times if it clunks a lot do a visual of the u-joints(shaped like an x
about 3" long on both lines that connects axles to tranny/tranfer case
or axle to differentials). I would have the transmision serviced IF
the fluid has good color.
There may be a couple of places that will give a free or low cost
diagnostic/estimate. I would get at least 2 to keep them honest.

Thanks all for the comments. The transmission fluid was changed when
I bought the car in August of '05 at 54k miles. I'll keep an eye on
the rest of the stuff you all mention, including the u-joint. Much
appreciated!
