URGENT!!! I require the _complete_ lyrics of the Ballad of the Wanton Wife of Bath. The first stanza of the ballad goes "In Bath a wanton wife did dwell / as Chaucer he doth write / Who did in pleasure spend her days / in many a fond delight". It can be found in the following books: "The Pepys Ballads", intr. W.G. Day, n. 39 (Cambridge, 1987) Thomas Percy, "Reliques of Ancient (English?) Poetry", vol. III, II, 12 (first and second editions only). Please note that the version found in http://www3.telus.net/Impatient_Cottage/bpnlaug03.pdf does not include the complete ballad. Thanks! |

If it's urgent, we can do it...even on a holiday! The full ballad is here: http://www.hti.umich.edu/cgi/t/text/pageviewer-idx?c=genpub;cc=genpub;xc=1;xg=1;sid=819722463e11b055b67ea2f409a33af1;q1=Wanton%20Wife%20of%20Bath;rgn=full%20text;idno=ABF2062.0008.001;view=image;seq=00000158 The format above is an image of the page in a book. However, you can switch to a text version (machine generated, so there are often typos) by making use of the "page forma" pull down menu in the upper left. Let me know if you need any additional information. pafalafa-ga search strategy: Searched the Making of America website for "Wanton Wife of Bath" |
