Does this suffice as an answer to your question?

"The most important role of discounters like Mrs. Jebavy is to place a
home on a local multiple-listing service or "MLS" database. There are
more than 1,000 MLS's in the U.S., each specific to a local market.
Most are owned by local organizations under the umbrella of the
National Association of Realtors. Large, established brokers usually
dominate the boards of these groups."

Is there anyway to back up their claim? maybe through a research
study done or a survey by the NAR or something? If not I'll take this
answer.

After further research, I have not been able to find any back up to this claim.

900 MLS's

From the an article in the US Newswire published on October 25, 2005

According to Cathy Whatley who was President of the National Board of
Realtors (NAR) in 2003, there are 900 MLS?s in the United States.

"Providing buyers with information about the properties that are for
sale, usually by consulting one of the nation's 900 multiple listing
services, is just one of the services real estate professionals
provide. Once buyers identify the house they want to buy, they must be
able to successfully negotiate a contract. If they are successful in
getting their offer accepted, many other services are required in
order to close the transaction. These include arranging inspections,
mortgage application and approval, escrow, title insurance,
coordination and scheduling of closing, ordering utilities, planning
the move, etc. In most cases, participation of a broker/agent to
assist the buyer throughout the process is very helpful, if not
essential,"

MLS can mean many things. Master of Library Science. Multiple Listing
Service. Major League Soccer.
