Hello jmontauk,
1. Website of the National Assoication of Real Estate Appraisers:
national searchable member directory
http://www.iami.org/6/directory2.cfm
2. Website of the Appraisal Insitute in Chicago. National searchable
list of appraisers: for the small upstate New York city in which I
live, six are listed (two of them at a bank).
http://www.appraisalinstitute.org/
3. This website of the American Society of Appraisers appears to have
the best search functionality, allowing you to search in very specific
categories of appraisal, as well as geographically:
http://www.appraisers.org/findappraiser/
4. This one calls itself ""The Real Estate Industry's Largest & Best
Internet Database Of Real Estate Appraisal Companies & Appraisers"
http://feeappraiser.com/
(This site also as a section of "Tips on Hiring An Appraiser," which
may be useful to you.)
5. Finally there is this comprehensive directory at Yahoo of ONLINE
appraisal services, which includes sites like Housevalues.com, which
can give you some idea of the valuation of your property without an
on-site appraisal.

One more suggestion. Your Google Answers name suggests you may be in
New York State, in which case you will want to also consult this site
of the New York State Society of Real Estate Appraisers:
http://www.nysar.com/nyssrea/
Hope this list is sufficient for your needs!

thanks for going the extra effort on this but I only 4 (the first 4)
are useful, the yahoo one and nysar isn't useful. Can you find one
more similar to the others?

Sure thing.
Here is a fifth resource that seem quite useful, informaiton-rich, and
very easy to navigate.
http://www.mercury.alamode.com/
What I like about this one is that it has a clickable US map, down to
the county level. I went to Madison County, Ohio, and found three
pages of appraisers (none of them at banks), with links to any of them
that have their own website. I chose to click through to the website
of Clark Associates and found a very informative website about
appraisal in general.
http://www.clarkappraisal.net/
I am sure that spending some time at this directory website--and
browsing a few of the listings--will provide you with all the general
information you may need, as well as a solid list of appraisers in
your area.
