Advice needed in selecting a portable cassette player I need to find a portable cassette player that is capable of stereo output directly to external speakers or to an amplifier or computer soundcard etc. It must also have input provisions to record from another source e.g. from the output of a soundcard or a microphone etc. (preferably stereo) I have a fairly small budget so am looking for something cheap, and am open to models that may no longer be in production, but are available second hand. So far I have not had much look trying to find what I want, as most of the conventional phono type jack inputs / outputs only seem to be available on non portable units. I would be very grateful for any suggestions people may have |

By portable do you mean personal (walkman-style) or simply capable of use independently of a stereo system? The latter were popular in the 1970s and 1980s and you might find one second hand. The following models appear worth considering, but are MIC input only. Panasonic RQ-A220 Stereo radio cassette recorder. Powerful 3 speaker stereo sound with headphones. http://www.youreq.com/homeeq/audio/portable-cassettes/panasonic/rqa220.asp http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00008N6XJ/ref=ase_ebookcrossroa-20/103-7292984-2835847 (not in stock/discontinued) Input: MIC jack. External mic not supplied. Also internal mic. Output: headphone jack. Sony WM-GX221 Walkman Stereo Cassette Player/Recorder http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00006I5U3/ref=ase_ebookcrossroa-20/103-7292984-2835847 Input: MIC jack. Stereo mic supplied as accessory. Also built-in mic. Output: Headphones/Speaker 8-300 ohms The amazon site has links to product manual PDFs. For general purpose use, a stereo headphone output can be regarded as equivalent to a line output, and 3.5mm / 1/8" jack to phono adapter leads are readily available. If your budget will stretch, you might look at personal minidisk recorders. Owain |
