I need help locating a study that was done on smoker some years back.
(I don't know when or what the study was called.) The gist of the
study went as follows...

A group of smokers who had tried to quit in the past were given a
statement similar to the one below:

"Smoking is a filthy, disgusting habit. Only the most worthless,
low-down people smoke. I don't do it because I hate it, it disgusts me
and it makes physically sick. I can't stand the smell and the taste is
downright repulsive. Just the thought of a cigarette makes me nauseous
to the point that I want to vomit. I hate smoking."

I seem to recall that repeating this statement every morning in the
mirror caused many of the participants to quit for good, but I need to
locate the actual study before I can be sure. You help would be
greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Walt,

I tried (and failed) to find such a study when I saw your similar
question last August. Are you certain that this was an actual,
formally constituted research study, and not just a magazine article
suggesting that reciting anti-smoking statements might help a person
to quit? It just seems to me that if this had been documented to be
effective, this method would be widely publicized.

This kind of thing is plentiful, but as far as I can tell, the
suggestion isn't backed up by any research:

"How to Quit Smoking
Put it in writing. Why do you want to quit? Write the reasons in a
list, and refer to it frequently. You may even want to tape the list
to your bathroom mirror and repeat it to yourself every morning..."
