I run Xemion.com. It's a directory of web designers sorted by city
and state. Large cities have their own page, designers in smaller
cities are listed on the main state page. The city pages were created
from US Census data. This worked well in every state but California.
I have way too many cities in California. I know many of these cities
are actually suberbs of LA or SF.

Please look at the below link and compact the cities for me. I want
*two* pieces of information.

1.) The cities I should have (City A and City B)
2.) For the cities I don't need (City C and City D), where do they go?
Should designers from those cities be listed under City A or City B?

Please let me know if you have questions. I would prefer that this be
answered by someone from CA. Thanks.

Hi Xemion,

I'm in California... so I guess I qualify here. :-)

Given the cities that you've listed, the simplest way to split your
list into two is to divide it into "Northern California" and
"Southern California."

Of course, reasonable minds may disagree over location of the dividing
line, but I've always heard that everything south of the Tehachapi
Mountains is "Southern Calfornia," so I'll stick with that.

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA:

Bakersfield
Berkeley
Concord
Daly City
Fremont
Fresno
Hayward
Modesto
Oakland
Sacramento
Salinas
San Francisco
San Jose
Santa Clara
Santa Rosa
Stockton
Sunnyvale
Vallejo

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA:

Anaheim
Burbank
Chula Vista
Corona
Costa Mesa
Downey
East Los Angeles
El Monte
Escondido
Fontana
Fullerton
Garden Grove
Glendale
Huntington Beach
Inglewood
Irvine
Lancaster
Long Beach
Los Angeles
Moreno Valley
Norwalk
Oceanside
Ontario
Orange
Oxnard
Palmdale
Pasadena
Pomona
Rancho Cucamonga
Riverside
San Bernardino
San Diego
Santa Ana
Santa Clarita
Simi Valley
Thousand Oaks
Torrance
West Covina

----------------------

However, if you want to be a little more precise, you might consider
splitting the list it into four regions rather than two:

SAN FRANCISCO (AREA):

Berkeley
Concord
Daly City
Fremont
Hayward
Oakland
Salinas
San Francisco
San Jose
Santa Clara
Santa Rosa
Stockton
Sunnyvale
Vallejo

CENTRAL VALLEY:

Bakersfield
Fresno
Modesto
Sacramento
Stockton

LOS ANGELES (AREA):

Anaheim
Burbank
Corona
Costa Mesa
Downey
East Los Angeles
El Monte
Fontana
Fullerton
Garden Grove
Glendale
Huntington Beach
Inglewood
Irvine
Lancaster
Long Beach
Los Angeles
Moreno Valley
Norwalk
Ontario
Orange
Oxnard
Palmdale
Pasadena
Pomona
Rancho Cucamonga
Riverside
San Bernardino
Santa Ana
Santa Clarita
Simi Valley
Thousand Oaks
Torrance
West Covina

SAN DIEGO (AREA)

Chula Vista
Escondido
Oceanside
San Diego

I notice that when I split the list into four, I put Stockton in two
lists. It should be in the "Central Valley" list.

You split it up into four areas, I wasn't expecting that few. Would
it be possible (and logical) to split it up into more like 10-20?

I'm paid for each designer who lists their firm and there's a limit on
the number of designers I allow for each city. I don't want too few
cities, I just want them more condensed.

What are your thoughts?

Oh, I guess your request for "City A" and "City B" (with "City C"
being a 2nd tier city), led me to believe that you wanted just two
lists.

Okay, I'll break it down into a dozen logical areas:

SAN FRANCISCO / PENINSULA:
Daly City
San Francisco

OAKLAND / EAST BAY :
Berkeley
Concord
Fremont
Hayward
Oakland
Vallejo

SAN JOSE / SILICON VALLEY
San Jose
Santa Clara
Sunnyvale

SANTA ROSA / NORTH COAST
Santa Rosa

SALINAS / CENTRAL COAST:
Salinas

BAKERSFIELD:
Bakersfield

SACRAMENTO / CENTRAL VALLEY:
Modesto
Sacramento
Stockton

FRESNO:
Fresno

LOS ANGELES (AREA):
Burbank
Downey
East Los Angeles
El Monte
Glendale
Inglewood
Lancaster
Long Beach
Los Angeles
Norwalk
Oxnard
Palmdale
Pasadena
Pomona
Santa Clarita
Simi Valley
Thousand Oaks
Torrance
West Covina

RIVERSIDE AREA:
Corona
Fontana
Moreno Valley
Ontario
Rancho Cucamonga
Riverside
San Bernardino

ANAHEIM / ORANGE COUNTY AREA:
Anaheim
Costa Mesa
Fullerton
Garden Grove
Huntington Beach
Irvine
Orange
Santa Ana

SAN DIEGO AREA:
Chula Vista
Escondido
Oceanside
San Diego

I hope this helps.

May I have a quick freebie? Under which section would "Newport Beach"
go under or is it it's own section? Thanks.

Hi,

Put Newport Beach under "ANAHEIM / ORANGE COUNTY."
