Dear rstuart-ga;
Thank you for allowing me an opportunity to answer your interesting question.
For many decades now Ford and Mercury have both used the moniker XR to
denote the ?Experimental Racing? models of various vehicles and motors
they produce. Among them, to name just a few, are Capri XR2, Lynx XR3,
Merkur XR4Ti, Topaz XR5, and the Cougar XR7.
Below you will find that I have carefully defined my search strategy
for you in the event that you need to search for more information. By
following the same type of searches that I did you may be able to
enhance the research I have provided even further. I hope you find
that my research exceeds your expectations. If you have any questions
about my research please post a clarification request prior to rating
the answer. Otherwise, I welcome your rating and your final comments
and I look forward to working with you again in the near future. Thank
you for bringing your question to us.
Best regards;

the fifferences between
mercury 120xr jetboat motor
and
mercury 120
the opperative difference is the moniker XP
what makes the two different
the 120 is 1995
the 120xr is 1996

I contacted Mercury Marine headquarters in Fon du Lac, Wisconsin and
to my astonishment I was told that the tag "XR" on that particular
sportjet model "...means absolutely nothing." Try as I might to get a
better picture of how the initials came to be from the naming source,
the explanation I was given was that the "XR" was applied to this
version in nothing more than a completely arbitrary fashion and serves
no purpose whatsoever except to distinguish a 120 from a 120XR.

Sometimes the answer confuses and amazes me too.
