I just broke my arm and am in a cast. I dont know how to sleep,dress,or avoid pain. I am in an aetna HMO and cannot find a doctor.Aetna sends me names and addresses that dont exist.I live in Memphis TN., area code 38120.
Clarification of Question by 14641-ga on 02 Jan 2005 11:37 PST Aetna's response was unhelpful. I just wanted doctors relevant to a broken arm,not a million pages of arbitrary doctors. I have a doctor now but I find Aetna hard to deal with.

Hummm...interesting....

When you say you broke your arm, I'm assuming you mean that you
fractured a bone in the arm itself...and that is why you are in a
cast. If you can't find a doctor, I'm assuming that is because you
went to an emergency room where a physician there did the casting.

Normally, that emergency room will recommend orthopedic physicians to
follow up with. They should be able to provide you with a list of
orthopedic physicians in that area.

However, I'm not sure your problem will be solved with a consult with
a physician, although doing so will be very wise for follow-up.
Usually a physician will not be able to give you much advice about
sleeping, dressing, and other functional activities. I would strongly
suggest a discussion with a physical therapist or occupational
therapist. You will most likely need one after the cast is removed
anyway. Now would be a great time to establish a relationship with
one.

Depending on if it is your dominant arm that is injured, a physical
therapist or occupational therapist may be able to provide you with
assistive devices (reachers, sock-aids, etc...) that will make
dressing easier.

Any of the three (physician, OT, or PT) should be able to advise you
of what movements you need to avoid so that the fracture will not be
placed in a stressed position.

Therefore:
1) Talk to the ER. Get a list of orthopedic physicians for follow-up.
2) Cross-reference that list with the list from your insurance.
3) Make an appointment.
4) Ask about your specific concerns: a) sleeping, b) pain, c) dressing issues.
5) Ask about consulting with an occupational therapist or physical therapist.

Hello 14641 and thanks for asking the question.

I am aware that Aetna has some issues with fraudulantly padding their
provider lists when they came into the central United States. Since
then, their Online Provider Referral Directory has done a pretty good
job of finding the proper providers and allows you to search by local
area and by your insurance type.

Here is a link to 50 doctors (in order by closeness to your zip code)
from the online directory. I selected that you had a general HMO
policy, however you should still ask the office upon calling prior to
setting up an appointment with a doctor. :-)
