Question ID: 448126
For a project, I am trying to find the home addresses of orthopaedic
surgeons in the Kent area of the United Kingdom.

I am aware that this information would be found in the "Medical
Directory", a commercial publication which is found in most UK medical
libraries. However, today is a public holiday and I don't have access
(I live in Cambridge UK).

I am aware that there is an electronic version of the Medical
Directory, the "Electronic Medical Directory"

For example see:
http://www.bma.org.uk/ap.nsf/Content/LIBBiographicalInformation

"The Medical Directory is a commercial publication which contains
information about most UK doctors. It gives fuller information than
the Medical Register and includes details of medical school attended,
speciality, major published papers and previous posts. The latest
volume is kept in the library general office and a full set back to
the 1850s is kept in the BMA Archive.

"Membership lists of Royal Colleges and other professional
associations are kept in the Quick Reference collection at Q Ref 11
REG. There are some general biographical directories at Q Ref 11. The
Medical Sciences International Who's Who contains over 10 000 short
biographies.

"The Electronic Medical Directory 2002/2003 contains more information
than the printed version. It can be searched by multiple parameters to
retrieve, say, all ophthalmologists working in London. You can cut and
paste information to other text documents. The truncation symbol is an
asterix (*)."

Can you find out more about this Electronic Medical Directory. What I
would like is, to pay $200-$300 online and have online access to it
today.

Thanks

It looks like I won't get online access today. Many thanks for your efforts.

I have decided to go out and buy the print version. After a bit of
phoning around I found one bookstore in Cambridge, Heffers, which has
it in stock.

On the page you mentioned
http://www.bma.org.uk/ap.nsf/Content/LIBBiographicalInformation

there is the following link:
"The Medical Register is a comprehensive list of UK doctors who have
been accepted on the register. It does not, however, give much
information. The latest volume is kept in the library general office
and a full set back to the 1850s is kept in the BMA Archives. The
General Medical Council website includes the current database. Select
'check a doctors registration'":
http://www.gmc-uk.org/

Is this the website you are trying to find? However, currently I cannot access it.

I am not GA Researcher. I am writing this comment without waiting for
a Researcher to answer because you said you would like to find the
website today.

I could only find libraries providing access to this database, i.e. I
did not find a webpage enabling a direct access.

I'm afraid this doesn't look hopeful for access today:
