I've found some anecdotal evidence on the web that there has been a
recent "baby boom" in Copenhagen. I need verification from a reliable
source that this is, in fact, true. Ideally, I would like population
figures or a news story that points out/discusses the recent baby
boom. Answer needed by this Friday, February 24.

Dear lazywriter-ga,

It appears that since 1990, Copenhagen has been undergoing a ?baby
boom?. I can provide two sources for you. The first is Government
statistics from Denmark?s Statistikbank, and the second is an article
from Copenhagen Post quoting statistics from Copenhagen?s Statistical
Office.

Statistikbank provides population statistics. If you need additional
information, or a search by different criteria, go to
http://www.statbank.dk/BEV21
Click on> Populations and elections which appears at the top of the
page. You should then have a list of folders, one of which will be
Births and Deaths. From this folder you can stipulate the information
you require.

These are the statistics for Liveborn births in Copenhagen between
1974 and 2004 (the 2005 figure is not yet broken down into areas).

1974 6682
1975 6354
1976 5326
1977 4932
1978 4887
1979 4786
1980 4710
1981 4396
1982 4456
1983 4425
1984 4397
1985 4716
1986 4690
1987 4907
1988 5331
1989 5797
1990 5832
1991 6072
1992 6429
1993 6565
1994 6954
1995 7042
1996 7168
1997 7222
1998 7266
1999 7597
2000 7914
2001 8122
2002 8039
2003 8135
2004 8072

The Copenhagen Post quotes statistics from Copenhagen?s Statistical Office.
"In 1990 the number of families with children grew by 500 per year,
and since 2000 they have gone up by 900 every year," Halckendorff
said. "The main reason is more women of childbearing age, including a
rising number of foreigners."

This page of Copenhagen?s Statistical Office provides some basic
population information.
http://www.sk.kk.dk/english/tal_faktaUK/befolkning1a.html

It does note on this other page that ?In comparison with the rest of
the country, Copenhagen has relatively fewer children and young, fewer
older people and a significant abundance of 20 - 34 year olds. This
age group comprises 34.9 percent of the population of Copenhagen, in
contrast to only 19.0 percent of the entire population in Denmark.?

The bar chart shows, however, that Copenhagen does have a larger group
of 1-4 year olds than the rest of Denmark.

I hope this answers your question. If it does not, or the answer is
unclear, then please ask for clarification of this research before
rating the answer. I shall respond to the clarification request as
soon as I receive it.
