I have a copy of The Art Journal 1862, New Series, Volume 1. Printed by James S Virtue, City Road, London. (324 pages, hard cover). It's in fair condition (Cover is a bit tattered but pages are in reasonably good condition & readable.) Could someone tell me the approx value of this Journal? |

Dear chasask-ga; Thank you for allowing me to answer your interesting question. Generally speaking, Art Journals from this era like the one you mentioned normally sell on the collectors market for anywhere from $20 to $250 dollars depending on what they are and what condition they are in: BIBLIO http://www.biblio.com/search.php?tid=0&auid=0&stage=1&author=Art+Journal&title=THE+ART+- HIGH RANGE: Here is an example described as being in ?very good? condition (a former library copy) for sale for $150. I found no other examples listed this high or higher: BIBLIO http://illiad.biblio.com/books/9258560.html MID RANGE: I found where another copy of ?THE ART JOURNAL 1862? in relatively ?fair condition? recently sold for $115.00 http://64.233.167.104/search?q=cache:E3Nby-pn0roJ:www.biblio.com/browse_books/title/t/25997.html+%22The+Art+Journal+1862%22&hl=en LOW END: Yet another copy (in less desirable condition perhaps) is being offered for sale for $50 here: DUKES SALES http://www.dukes-auctions.co.uk/Catalogues/Pf141102/page15.htm I think it is more than safe to say that $50-$150 (relative to its condition) is what you could expect this volume to sell for, perhaps a bit more if you were to find a collector who really wants this particular book badly or needs it to complete a collection. You might contact INVALUABLE, an online art market and inquire as to the history of their sales to get a better idea of how much your example might be worth. Registration is free to browse their site and if I am interpreting their listing correctly you will see that their site indicates that they have sold a number of copies of this book in past transactions. I?m sure this will confirm my information. INVALUABLE http://www.invaluable.com/PartnerPages/PartnerHomePage.aspx?ClientID=1040195 I hope you find that my research exceeds your expectations. If you have any questions about my research please post a clarification request prior to rating the answer. Otherwise I welcome your rating and your final comments and I look forward to working with you again in the near future. Thank you for bringing your question to us. Best regards; Tutuzdad-ga ? Probably not much. Such magazines and journals of the era are common, and unless in very good to excellent condition, don't bring much in the marketplace. A lot depends on what the articles are, and what the artwork is like. For example, an article by a famous artist would garner more interest. And full page illustrations are attractive to many buyers.
