No, the Gila Woodpecker is not a type of hawk. I found a great site that characterizes living things well. Gila Woodpeckers (Melanerpes uropygialis) are classified as follows, w/ link: Kingdom Animalia -> Phylum Chordata -> Subphylum Vertebrata -> Class Aves -> Order Piciformes -> Family Picidae -> Species Melanerpes uropygialis http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/site/accounts/classification/Melanerpes_uropygialis.html#Melanerpes%20uropygialis Hawks (Accipitridaes) are classified as follows, w/ link: Kingdom Animalia -> Phylum Chordata -> Subphylum Vertebrata -> Class Aves -> Order Falconiformes -> Family Accipitridae http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/site/accounts/classification/Accipitridae.html#Accipitridae |
