"Affiliate programs" are basically a way for smaller online businesses
-- specifically those that cannot afford their own marketing
department -- to promote their business online. The solution is to
offer an 'affiliate' program with the main advantage that they only
pay for the actual sales the marketer generates, rather than keeping
someone on the payroll to generate sales.

An affiliate (also known as an online or internet marketer) will join
the program, with the agreement to promote the company using special
url links (which usually includes the affiliate name or an id number)
provided by the company. The marketer then begins placing those links
in online advertising of many different kinds. (Without exception,
each and every ad you see is from one affiliate marketer or another.)

Each time that link is used to access the main site and it results in
a sale, the affiliate earns a commission. This situation is ideal for
the company since it only pays for advertising that results in sales.

Though I do not know what you mean by "there are three major ones," I
will assume, for the purpose of this response, that you mean three
major TYPES of affiliate program. And, if so, I am also not sure what
you mean by three since I am only aware of two types: basic affiliate
programs and mlm programs.

A basic affiliate program is just as I described above.

An MLM (multi-level marketing) program is the same as the above but,
in addition, the affiliate can also earn a commission from bringing in
OTHER marketers by advertising the affiliate program itself. This is
a way of building your sales force team instead of simply waiting for
affiliate marketers to sign up.

For specific examples of this see the links below:

As these examples demonstrate, sign-up is usually free for the
affiliate and additional company support to them includes providing
them with a unique website, as well as tracking and monitoring sales,
site visits, etc., and providing some kind of marketing information
and support.

Since the affiliate marketer invests time, energy and their own money
for much of the actual advertising, this is expected. Also, since a
basic website can be designed once and altered for each affiliate,
this is not as big an investment as it may seem and ensures that the
company is in control of its representation.

Also, a simpler way of doing this is by simply creating a
tracking-style system, with all affiliate links leading back to a main
site. For instance,

http://www.simplerleads.com/affiliates/idevaffiliate.php?id=623881

In these examples, the affiliates' link is the only tracking used for
their sales.

Hope this has been some help.

Thanks, and I was referring to CJ, or Commission Junction as it is called.
One of my web guys told me there are only three people who are large that
manage this. Thanks for the tips.
