I need to identify a series of children's books. These were books that
I read as a child sometime between 1974 and 1978, when I was between 5
and 9 years old. Specifically, I checked these books out from the
Lawrence Public Library in Lawrence, Kansas.

These books had a ranch-type theme. There may have been a male
protagonist who spanned the series, or maybe not. The stories were
good as I recall, with simple black-and-white line illustrations. They
were not picture books. I think they were as thick as a Hardee-Boys
book, but the stories were easier to read.

I don't recall how many were in the series, but I remember going back
to read more than just one. I may have read 3 or 4 of them. I don't
remember the author or any of the titles. The stories, as best I can
recall, centered around the west, doing ranch work, and the like.

Any specific suggestions to look at would be great.

Hmm, well none of them hit me dead center as being *IT*, but "The Boy
Ranchers" seems familiar. My recollection was that the book exterior
was pretty plain, but that could be beacuse the library removed the
jackets. "The X Bar X Boys" seems somewhat familiar too, but only the
title. The book images didn't seem familiar at all.

My recollection is that the books weren't quite as western as the ones
proposed, but my memory certainly could be off on this.

If there are any more I can look at pass them along. I'll review "The
Boy Ranchers" some more. It appears that full text is available on one
or more of these books on the internet.

In the 1950s & 1960s, Glenn Balch wrote a series of children's books
set on the "Tack Ranch" in Idaho. "Ben Darby" and "Vince Darby" were
lead characters.

See the cover of one of the books on eBay:

Sound familiar?

Is it the Pocomoto series by Rex Dixon, which I remember reading in the fifties.
