In terms of numbers go to: http://neighbourhood.statistics.gov.uk
-Select Topics
-Then Select Housing
-Then Select Other Statistics

There you will find links for
-Tenure (KS18)
-Tenure (KS18) for Amalgamated Parishes
-Tenure - Households (UV63)
-Tenure - Pensioners (UV45)
-Tenure - People (UV43)

Simply select the links you desire (probably best to start with
Tenure), and it will produce a table. There is statistics available up
until 2004.

This will give you some indication to the first two parts of your question

Also of interest might be the University of York's Centre for Housing
Policy (CHP) at http://www.york.ac.uk/inst/chp/

They have conducted a lot of research into the Private housing market
in the UK, along with the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.

It also has a full joint website at http://www.ukhousingreview.org.uk/
which have the latest findings on-line.

Hope this helps
