I am leaving my job in a few days to take another opportunity at
another employer. My company told me today that they are going to
deduct from my last paycheck dues (for 2006) for professional
societies where my membership was required in order to perform my job
duties. I never agreed to this and to my knowledge, nothing about
this policy is documented.

Can they do this? What recourse do I have?

The dues are for calendar year 2006 and they have already been paid to
the professional societies. Now my company wants the money back.

They say they have a policy/history of doing this if a person leaves
before May of any calendar year.
