I am running XP with Service Pack 2. My media players--Windows Media
version 10, itunes, and Real Player all suddenly developed an
inability to copy audio CDs. Whenever I try with any of the above
programs, I get 2% to 10% into copying the first tune and the computer
freezes and I have to use the power button to switch it off. This
happens whether I use the audio CD drive or the DVD drive. How might
I solve the problem? I already used system restore and reinstalled
the software.

Is it possible that the CDs you are trying to copy are protected (for
example, EMI has copy protection and this is denoted by a special
symbol on their packaging)? I know that the copy encryption of these
is in the first track.

The content is definitely not copy protected; I tried beginning with
tracks otehr than track 1, and I tried several CDs containing audio
tracks, including non commercial rough mixes of my own. The same
thing happens.

to omarre-ga: Do you think that some software you had to install with
the new CD burner may have been the fix? And this was happening to
you when you tried to rip audio from a CD to your computer, correct?

I had the same problem two weeks ago. The cd burner was three years
old so I replaced it and no more problems. Hope you don't have to do
this, but it's not too expensive.
