I have a Sony TV set. The number is kv27exr25. It is about 10 years old.

Any text on the screen has become fuzzy and is in most cases
impossible to read unless it is very large.

Does it make sense to attempt to get this fixed or is it most likely
something expensive like the tube?

Thanks

Unless there are other problems, the picture tube likely is not the
problem. The set may have some adjustments you can reach without
removing the back. If you don't mind the risk of possibly fatal shock,
you can try some adjustments inside. In each case mark the beginning
position, before you turn any adjustments. That allows you to return
to the beginning adjustment, if you don't notice any change. Often you
will notice no change, but adjusting can produce accumulating bad
effects. A large mirror will help you watch the screen if you are
making adjustments behind the set. On some sets turning off the AFC =
automatic frequency control and the ACC automatic color control helps.
Change the vivid colors to pastels, and turn the brightness and
contrast so most of the whites are grey. Often this reduces the fuzzy
a lot.
Unless you know a TV repairman who owes you a favor, fixing a ten
year old set is rarely wise. One about that old, that we had fixed, a
year ago now has two new problems, but it is still watchable. Neil

If the fuzziness is just fuzzy and not distinct colour separation, the
focus has drifted. Not uncommon on older sets. Inside, on the EHT
transformer (identifiable as the other end of the EHT lead to the
tube) there are two plastic bodied presets. One is the ?Screen? (which
sets brightness) and the other ?Focus?. It may need a bit of a twist
to ?crack? it from it?s position.

You may be safer making a small adjustment with the power off, then
switching on to see if there is improvement. Bear in mind that even
after switch off there is still 25kV lurking to zap you. I have
however been belted many times and rarely been killed.

If the fuzzinesss is due to colour misconvergence, it is easily
fixable but you?ll still be charged lots just for someone to look at
it.

With the price of TV's so dramatically dropping, why not slurge and buy a new one?
