I am considering starting a non-profit group or ?club.? The
organization may start out as only a small, informal group to discuss
the ideas of Ayn Rand and her books, and grow from there. After
initial success, I will seek to establish it as a non-for-profit
entity or organization. My question relates to an action that
presupposes that step: the name of the organization itself.
I would want to name it after a character in one of her novels, a
title of one of her books, or her herself; or a combination or ?take
off? of these phrases or words. I discuss what I mean by ?take off?
below.
My question is: how do copyrights & trademarks restrict my naming
options? What else restricts my naming choices? What else should I
know?
With the above restrictions in mind, can you give me three (3)
examples of a name for such an organization (assuming copyright,
trademark, and other restrictions are the same, although they may not
be in real life), using OTHER author?s names, characters, and book
titles? This will result in a total of nine examples. In each set,
please have one example be a ?take off? example. This may sound like
an odd request, but I want to insure I understand my options.
In addition to typical copyright and trademark concerns, I suspect
that there are specific restrictions placed upon the uses of Ayn Rand
by Leonard Peikoff, the Ayn Rand Institute, and her estate.
I thank you in advance.

*In this question, I use the term ?take off? to be just that: a take
off a phrase or word that cites the original. For example, a take-off
title for a club for ?The Count of Monte Cristo? by Alexandre Dumas
might be ?The Club of Monte Cristo,? etc. |
