I am a Software Developer with 17+ years of experience, half in Unix,
the later half on the Windows platform. Also some minor (< 1 year)
Linux experience (low level network drivers).
I have been consulting for over a year and so far all my jobs came
from people previously known through my employment career.
My main expertise is in software performance and large software
projects, although I really enjoy to work with embedded projects also.

My question is what are good sites that cater to software consultants
like me for finding new projects.

Hi opedroso-ga,

I am a bit unclear as to whether you want to consult from home, or
are willing to take on new consulting jobs by relocating. However, in
either case, some very specific sites came to mind when I read your
question.

First off, the AllFreelance Search Engine came to mind. As they
quote on their website, "All Freelance Search Engine is a free service
that searches more than 20 of the Internet's top freelance job sites.
Some of the sites that this engine searches are Guru, Elance,
Smarterwork, Freelancers.net, Bullhorn, AllFreelanceWork and many
others. This service, from the same owners of AllFreelance
(http://www.AllFreelance.com/), was developed to save Freelancers from
the hassle of searching tons of job sites on a daily basis. Not only
does All Freelance Search save you valuable time, but it also makes
your career search much easier. All Freelance Search users receive a
daily email containing job opportunities from over twenty top
freelance job sites. Users can choose up to three of their own search
terms and decide how often they want the jobs sent to their mailbox.
Quality results are then emailed to the freelancer categorized by
search term and by contributing site. Every job is linked to the
relevant web page, and clicking on this link opens a page showing the
vacancy."
http://www.allfreelancesearch.com/aboutus.html
I did a quick search on their site,
http://www.allfreelancesearch.com/ , typing in the search term
“software development consultant” and came up with over 2200
references. That doesn’t mean they are all available, or all are are
on a“work from home” basis. You may have to be extremely specific in
your search terms to find the software consulting jobs that fit with
your particular expertise.

If you are adventurous and want to bid for freelance jobs all over
the country, then Elance is the site for you. I tried a sample search
under “software and technology” and came up with five pages of
freelance bidding jobs. The site allows you to see all the bids that
have been placed, so depending on how much you want the job, you can
make a pretty accurate bid. You must subcribe to the site, however.
The fee seems very reasonable. You can browse all listed jobs free of
charge, but you cannot bid until you become a member. The home page is
at http://www.elance.com/ Subscription information is at
http://www.elance.com/c/cats/main/sellers.pl?

Hotjobs is another online resource for freelancers and consultants.
The job searches are free. If you are adamant about working from home,
it is recommended that you type in “freelance” or “telecommute” along
with your job description. Their site is at http://www.hotjobs.com/

And finally, here is one more gigantic reference from Google that
offers a compilation of an abundance of online job sites with
descriptions of their particular focus. It will take some searching,
but if you are serious about expanding your consulting work, you may
find some good leads.
http://directory.google.com/Top/Business/Employment/Job_Search/

I hope this offers a start for you. As I said, most of these sites
offer you the opportunity to work from home or relocate temporarily.
Good luck in your job search!

I am looking to do my work offsite, as opposed to relocated where the
work is.

I checked AllFreeLance.com and, although it does have an exchange of
projects, there are no projects in my area of expertise.

I checked hotjobs and searched for both freelance and telecommute as
you pointed out. Under "freelance and software", there were 9
returned, none in software, just that had the word software on them.
They were Graphic Artists, Translators, Mathematics Editor, an Art
Director. Nothing even close to software projects. Under "telecommute
software" there was a single software project out of 2 entries (the
other was an account manager...)

I did not know about Elance, but out of the Web area (not my
expertise), there are no meaningful projects.

I still have to check the others (Guru, Smarterwork, freelances.net,
bullhorn), but so far this answer was disappointing. Are you sure that
is all that is available out there? It could be that there are no
projects being offered at this time, but I don't think that is the
case.

Bottom line, I am disappointed with the answer as it currently stands.
Please check if you can improve on it. At least check if you can
actually find software projects behind the facade of these sites.

I’m sorry you did not find anything pleasing to you in your quick
search of the boards. However, I am confident that I gave you the best
leads possible, considering the fact that you don’t want to relocate.

Now, for the problem........you are the job-seeker, with your own
criteria and qualifications. I, as a researcher, can only point you to
the job boards that have jobs listed in your area. I cannot find the
exact job for you. You have given a certain background, but you also
said you worked as a “Software Developer”, and those are the search
terms I have used. I cannot analyze every one for you. As an example,
when I go on job boards and type in “researcher”, I get numerous hits
that come back with job descriptions which are not necessarily what I
want. However, I have also found numerous jobs that have been right up
my line. Of course, patience is important, as is the willingness to
search daily and deeply.

Yes, there are other job boards, like http://asp.computerwork.com/ ,
but they do not offer telecommuting jobs. Type in “software developer”
in the search box, and it will bring up a list of jobs, but you would
have to relocate. That, I guess, would not be a sufficient answer,
either. Typing in “software developer freelance”, or “software
developer telecommute” brings up nothing.

There is another site you can try, which is the site I use for many
of my freelance jobs. It is very important that you type in the exact
words that you think will bring up the jobs you want. There is a free
demo at the link I am giving you. I typed in “software developer” and
came back with a reasonable list of jobs. If the site looks promising,
you can join for any amount of time, and the fee is reaonable. Go to
the Home Employment Database at
http://www.homeworkers.org/?AID=1457542&PID=536746 In the upper left
corner, click on job list. On the next page, click on the link for
free demo above user name and password. When the next page comes up,
type in software developer as your keywords, and you will see the
types of jobs that come up. Don’t expect miracles to happen. Patience
is key to finding freelance jobs without recommendations from those
who know you. You might go weeks before you find something.

You said you searched the allfreelancesearch.com site.......boy, you
must be quick. From what I could see, there were over 215 pages
returned, with approximately 10 jobs on each page when I typed in the
search for “software developer.” Now, of course, not all of the jobs
are telecommuting jobs, nor are they all up your alley. But there are
some there. Generally, the references that come from "freelance" are
the only telecommuting jobs.

Did you notice that many of these online databases allow you to
post your own resume? That is also a help. Why not post your resume on
some of the sites?

As for elance.com......My search turned up quite a lot, though I
can’t clarify exactly which job specifications would be unique to
you......only you can do that. When I went to the home page, I clicked
on the tab for software and technology. On the next page, I clicked on
the “View all Projects” link, which brought me to this:
http://www.elance.com/c/rfp/main/rfpmkt.pl?catId=10182 . From what I
can see, there are over 5 pages of jobs listed, but you would have to
subscribe to the site before you can read about each one thoroughly.
It is in the actual job description that you would be able to analyze
if it is something your are willing to try.

Well, what can I say. My initial search, along with this
clarification and then follow-up searching, as well as contact with
other researchers to find other possible sites, has already taken
several hours. I didn’t merely give you a superficial list of online
sites.....I looked through them and checked them out before
recommending them. I sure hope you earn more with your freelance work
than I am earning with this particular question.

Having been self-employed for 25 years, I am used to searching long
and hard, making contacts, promoting myself, and working diligently on
all angles to find work. Hope you can do the same and find some good
results!

I expected the answer would be a series of websites that would have
good information on Software Projects for a consultant. What I got was
a winded reference to a single website (allfreelance.com) that seemed
almost as advertisement for it and two more passing references to
other well known websites. Plus after checking the results from the
answer, I believe the researcher went for quantity instead of quality,
not checking the quality of the leads being returned (just the
quantity of perceived hits).
I really wish I could send this question back to another researcher,
but I don't find an easy way of doing this, even though your FAQ is
quite clear about that possibility.
Thinking further, my iteration with the researcher would have been
more rewarding if we have iterated further before s/he answered it, as
s/he states in his first paragraph that s/he is unclear about part of
my question. Maybe the answer would have been closer to my
expectations then.

This advice is pretty good and the links hold promise. It's
unfortunate that some people expect world-class answers to their
problems for a pittance. Elance.com is an excellent resource.
