I would like to know where I can purchase some 1997 Riesling wine from the
Alsace region - specifically Marc Tempe. Label has Zellenbach noted
on it as well. If this wine can be located, what is price per case
and what arrangements can be made for shipping?

Hi !

As you know, these small regional domaines have a very low production
rate, and I've only been able to trace the '97 to restaurants - at up
to $65.00 a bottle -e.g.

http://www.pairsrestaurant.com/menu-wine.html

and to a source in Denmark:

MARC TEMPE, Zellenberg Sylvaner 1997 ("Sylvaner" is frequently used
as a name for a Riesling, especially in California.)

http://www.alsacevin.dk/forretni.htm

Bacchus Wine in Florida claim to import Marc Tempe wines in their "Old
World Wine Collection". They are a wholesale "distributor of artisan
wines " for Florida Restaurants and fine wine shops.

A password is required to access their prices, but it is possible to
email them

at info@bacchuswine.com;

You should note that these are wines that are made to drink young, and
even a vintage may not drink well after five years, which is getting
close now for the '97. I'd certainly want to try out a single bottle
before buying a case.

So you might like to consider the Marc Tempe Gewurtz Zellenberg '98
vintage (see note below on Gewurtz) which is well reviewed by Wine
Library, from whom it seems to be available. It is described as:

"Bright and appealing, with huge melon and lemon flavors and exploding
apple notes. Finishes soft and easy.If you are looking for a great
summer wine to wow your friends and family.....here it is!"

http://www.winelibrary.com/reviewwine.asp?item=14595

It is available from them at $22.99 $16.99 (203.88 per case)

The '99 vintage Riesling seems to be available from Bin 905 at $20.09
a bottle. The page is at:

http://www.bin905.com/catalog/product_info.php?Cpath=24_25&products_id=1689&PHPSESSID=21c5c1a262ad936183a6ece06de4f387

Note that Gewurtz and Rieslings are very similar and often ddescribed
in the same breath as Gewurtz/Riesling - or even both marketed as
Riesling since it is the more well-known variety.

http://www.epicurious.com/run/winedictionary/home

describes Riesling as:

"The Riesling grape's ability to retain its acidity while achieving
high sugar levels is what creates wines with considerable aging
potential. Riesling wines are DELICATE but COMPLEX and are
characterized by a SPICY, FRUITY flavor (that's sometimes reminiscent
of peaches and apricots), a flower-scented BOUQUET, and a long FINISH.
"

and Gewurtz as:

"The German word gewürtz means "spiced," and these wines are known for
their CRISP, SPICY attributes. They're highly fragrant, with flavor
characteristics of litchis, roses (or flowers in general), and spices
such as cloves and nutmeg. "

I hope this helps.

I've searched through the French Yellow Pages and White Pages to try
to trace the Vineyard itself with no luck. I do have a friend in
France who might be able to help with that if it interests you but it
will take time to contact her especially since she is likely to be on
vacation at present.

reference site you sent me clearly lists wines they have and Rieslings
were not among them. Did you check the site before posting answer and
sending me to that site?

I am sorry,I did check the site but focused on Marc Tempe and Alsace
instead of specifically looking for the riesling.

Dear bgh-ga

I know your question has already been answered but I was searching on
that and I got a reply this morning that might be of value to you. I
do not know if two cases are enough but here is the answer from Matt

" ....

Thank you for your interest in the French imports of
Michel-Schlumberger. The wine that you are interested in, the 1997
Marc Tempe Riesling Zellenberg, is a library vintage, and no longer
available in your area at retail shops. There are two cases still
available if you go to our website www.michelschlumberger.com, scroll
to the bottom of the page and click on "Order Our Wines". When the
new page is finished loading, move your cursor to the left hand
navigation bar and click on "Alsace". This will bring you to three
individual wines which includes the 1997 Riesling Zellenberg. By
ordering via our website, you can have the wines shipped to DC.
If you are interested in the current release of that wine (which would
be the 1999), you can try MacArthur Beverage (202)338-1433 or
Calvert-Woodley (202)966-4400 (both in DC) If you have problems or
any other questions please feel free to drop me another e-mail, or
give a call to (800)447-3060 and ask for me or my colleague Steve
D'Agostini. Thank you again.

Hope this helps,
