What kind of editing do you have in mind? Do you desire to set
chapters, create menus, and the like?

I want to edit the DVD, just as I could edit the DV, by importing the
video into IMovie and then doing with it what I will.

You need to convert your DVD (MPEG-2) video back to DV video.

2 tools on the OS X: MacMPEG2Decoder and mm2c (aka. "Mac MPEG2
Converter"). Both are a bit flakey, but they can take the .VOB files
off of a DVD and convert them to DV.

Note: if your DVD is encrypted or region encoded, then you might have
to rip the DVD to your hard disk first, before converting the .VOB
files to DV. There is a tool called "DVDBackup" that can do this. (but
you may have to search around to find it.)

You'll have to join the audio and video files, but i'll let the guy
who is getting paid $25 to explain that. ;)
