Question ID: 450856
I used a condom with benzocaine (that numbs the penis for prolonged
activity)in April of 2003 and since then, I am not able to feel the
sensation of an ejaculation. The night I used the condom, my penis
stayed numb for what seemed to be an excessive time period, and I
could not feel my partner?s hand as she stroked my penis. I then
noticed that the next time I ejaculated, I did not feel the usual
pleasurable sensation. In fact, there was a slight burning sensation
(and still occurs at times) upon ejaculation. To this day, I cannot
feel an orgasm and I'm 100% sure it was caused by the condom, however,
no urologist has been able to provide help and I haven't found a lab
that is willing to test the condoms I have left to see if there were
other chemicals in the condoms, or too much benzocaine. And of
course, the condom company isn't providing any help. Could someone
research the use of benzocaine and its side-effects. Reply only if you
have some experience in this or a related area.

Dear callmevegas,

Let me state the obvious, that benzocaine is an insoluble ester that
is a local anesthetic, applied topically to the skin and mucous
membranes. It interferes with the ability of nerves to both initiate
and conduct electrical signals, which blocks the transmission of nerve
impulses that carry pain messages. In this way, benzocaine numbs the
nerve endings near the surface of the skin it is applied to.

It is likely that the numbness is attributed to nerve-damage caused by
rough oral/hand-jobs or wild thrusting, which went undetected.

It could also be, that it was caused by abrasion of your penis due to
your attempt to regain an erection, lost by the benzocaine?s effects.

Numbness is one of the symptoms of overdose. There could have been an
overdose of benzocaine; resulting in toxicity. Serious side-effects
include methemoglobinemia; a severe allergic reaction on the skin,
which produce large, red, hive-like swellings; while no common side
effects are associated with benzocaine. However, less common
side-effects are: contact dermatitis (skin irritation) causing mild
burning, stinging, swelling, itching or redness.

Methemoglobinemia is a condition which occurs when something other
than oxygen binds to hemoglobin in the blood stream, causing serious,
life-threatening problems.

It may be a little too late, but you might want to contact a Poison
Control Centre for more information on the management of overdose.

The burning sensation could additionally mean you have urethritis or
urinary tract infection (U.T.I.). (Obviously, this indicates you need
to be prescribed antibiotics by a general practitioner. Try drinking
lots of water, as well, to flush your urethra out.) This could even be
caused by a sexually-transmitted disease(s) (S.T.D./s).

Since you did not mention using any other substance(s) while employing
benzocaine, I will assume drug-interactions was not the cause.
(Benzocaine can actually react with compounds in sunscreens and hair
dyes to produce an allergic reaction.)

You should consult a general practitioner, since there are so many
possible causes of your condition. If he feels the need, he will then
refer you to a specialist.

If you have exhausted seeing the urologists in your area, you might
want to visit one out of the country. After all, it's worth it, isn't
it?

You will probably be given treatment for toxicity of benzocaine by
your G.P. Also, there are possible drugs or alternative medicines to
rejuvenate the nerve endings of your penis. Try consulting a
pharmacist first.

Thanks, but I should have been clearer in my request, I found most of
what you did in my own searches, and have been to two urologists who
did tests, etc. and found absolutely nothing - mostly because they had
never run across a case like this before. What I really need in terms
of research is to find a documented case of this happening to someone
else and the reason for the condition. I've contacted a few lawyers
(to sue the condom maker) and they won't take the case because they
couldn't find any similar cases (liability/personal injury lawyers
only get paid if they win, and they don't want to take an untested
case). I've contacted four labs to test the condoms and two of the
labs stated that condom makers are among their clients so they
couldn't do any work for me. So, I'm in a bind. I need to find the
other guy(s) out there that has the same exact problem I have.

1. I have been unable to find cases of such prolonged anesthesia after
a single benzocaine use.
2. I think that mechanical trauma and/or neuropraxia, because of more
extreme mechanical activity, made possible by reduced sensation during
coitus, as suggested by the other answers, is a more likely
explanation.
3. Psychological causes for numbness must always be borne in mind
4. These 3 points above may explain why no plaintiff attorney has yet
taken up your case
5. Many cases of neuropraxia return to full function.
6. Of course you should run through these points with your urologist.
