My mother-in-law has aqcuired an heirloom sampler (cross-stitch) and
she requested a translation. I was able to translate the basics from
the text message I received via instant messenger, I haven't seen the
piece it was written on for myself. The piece is supposedly from the
1800's.

It reads: "Lo hizo Pepa Tos y bru de 6 anos de edad en el Colegio de
?ualeguay en el ano de 1856 de dioado a mi Tia Dona Pepa ?u jol"

Hi starluck,

Can you ask your mother-in-law to examine the text again? Do you know
from which country this sampler originated?

There is a school, in Gualeguay, Argentina, that appears rather old!
http://ar.geocities.com/colegiosanjose_d48/

Lo hizo means "made", as in This was made by Pepa Tos

"y bru" may be a second last name, as is common in Spanish, Tos y Bru.

6 anos de edad means 6 years of age, or 6 years old

en el colegio de Ualeguay, is the name of a school or a school in a
town of Ualeguay or Gualeguay?
en el ano - in the year 1856

It may possibly really say de Dios, dado a mi Tia Dona Pepa, or 1856,
the year of our Lord, given to Aunt Pepa

It would be hard to say since some of the words are not properly
spelled or omitted.

Wish I could help more! Is there any way your mother-in-law could scan
the sampler and post the picture online?

Regards,crabcakes

Im a translator, and I live in mexico. The ? marks in your original
text mean that you couldnt understand what character it was?

With the given information : "Lo hizo Pepa Tos y bru de 6 anos de edad
en el Colegio de ?ualeguay en el ano de 1856 de dioado a mi Tia Dona
Pepa ?u jol".

I would translate "It was made by Pepa Tos and bru of 6 years of age
in the ?ualeguay College (it means school, not a university) in the
year 1856 of (dioado doesnt have any meaning, could be a misread word)
to my aunt Ms pepa ?u jol"

There you go...the best translation available for the text you entered
