I have a Precor efx 5.21si elliptical exercise machine. I would like
to buy or have custom built (inexpensively) a small shelf to place
below and in front of the display where I could place a small laptop
computer (IBM Thinkpad X40). If your answer involves a custom
solution, please include the cost. thanks.

Hello gw20044002, I have found the perfect solution for your laptop
mounting. I checked with Precor and found that the handrail tube for
your 5.21si is 1.5 inch diameter. "Interactive Products Corporation"
makes a mount that will fit your 1.5 inch tube. I talked with Mark at
IPC and got the following info:

http://www.laptraveler.com/automounts.htm

Phone: 1(888)552-7867

Part number: SRM-4188-SL-RWHD

Price: $229.95 Delivered (UPS Ground)

Mark was very helpful and if you have any questions he will be glad to help.

Be careful not to fall off the exerciser while surfing, Redhoss

Hi, thanks for the quick response but when I said "affordable" I was
thinking less than $50. $229 seems like more than "affordable". thanks

Sorry, I wrote "inexpensive" not affordable. Same idea.

The price sounded very good to me. I wouldn't put my expensive laptop
on a $50 "shelf". Fifty bucks doesn't buy much these days. I stand by
my solution.

Can you please find something less expensive. Even under $100.

I tried very hard to find the mount that I found. I called several
manufacturers after I had tried many searches to locate some
possibilities. I am fairly certain that you will not find a
manufactured bracket to suit your purpose any less expensive than what
I have found. People are not shy about offering comments even after a
question has been answered and I notice that no other researcher has
found anything better. If you were to find a local craftsman to
fabricate a bracket for you, I doubt that they could beat the price.
What you seek, even though it may seem simple to you, is a fairly
tough problem. It must be adjustable, mount to your existing
equipment, and be sturdy enough not to dump your laptop when
exercising. I am a mechanical engineer and I can appreciate how hard
it would be to build what you want. I am sorry that you are not
satisfied with the price, but I don't know of any other way to help
you.
