So that is 5 ft * 3.66 ft * 2.25 ft = 45 cubic feet
and 45 cubic feet in gallons is 336.623375 gallons

Hi Scrap,

I noticed your comment below, (and thanks leapinglizard-ga for the
follow up there for the elliptical tank). Yes, it really is that much.
I was surprised myself at the amount.

1 cubic foot of space holds 7.48 US gallons. I did the calculation for
the square tank four times, and even looked it up just to make sure I
wasn't messing something simple up. That is a big tank.

The answer would be correct if the tank has square edges, however most
oil tanks are rounded and you probably have a 275 gal. tank.

yes it is round. It really is that big though? I thought maybe 200 gallons at most.

If you have a 60-inch-long oil tank with an elliptical cross section
such that the maximum diameter is 44 inches and the minimum diameter
is 27 inches, then the volume of the tank is

  60 * 44/2 * 27/2 * pi = 60 * 22 * 13.5 * 3.14159 = 55983.14

cubic inches, or

  55983.14 / 231 = 242.35

gallons.

That's assuming accurate measurements, a perfectly elliptical cross
section, a smooth surface, a negligible wall thickness, and a
completely filled tank. In practice, the useable volume of your oil
tank will be somewhat smaller.
