Hi,
You need a cable splitter, instead of going through the other TV, to
pass the signal to both TV's at the same time. By going through the
other TV you are loosing probably 70% of your signal, which, as you
have seen, isn't going to work.
There is a fantastic FAQ on hooking up cables, and splitters for multiple TV's at:
http://www.broadbandreports.com/faq/cabletech
The guys there go through everything; what splitter to buy, why you
are buying it, what brands they have found to be good, and what to
look out for.
On this page he talks about what splitter you want to get. Here are
links to the ones he is recommending:
Monster

Regal

Looks like the Monster is the best way to go, the FAQ suggests that
you need to be prepared to spend some money, but the highest 2-Way
price I've seen is $12.00, and I wouldn't bother trying to save money
with the splitter. Buy the best you can, and buy the best cable you
can (HD cable, not the regular basic cable). The page for the FAQ will
cover just about anything else you can think of, if it doesn't then
let me know with a Clarification Request and I'll find that answer for
you as well.
thanks,
