I am looking for somewhere for two friends to stay in or near (within
20miles traveling distance) the City of York, UKm on the evening
Friday 23rd of August until and departing on Sunday the 25th of August
(2 nights).

My request that it be no more then £40 a night, but less is better.
Bed and breakfasts must have more then one room in the building (not
the one room B&B type, you often feel you are imposing), and ensuite
facilities and a double bed.

My choice at the moment would be:
http://www.travelodge.co.uk/booking/hotel.php?hotel_id=196

However at £59.95 a night, this is a little steep.

Holiday Inn is not much better, at £49.95 a night.

I live in York, but they hotels dont advertise in local press (epople
from the city are hardly going to use the hotels, are they?). I guess
I ought to go to the tourist information but I am just to busy, and
would like to see what is online.

Booking online not essential.

Cheers

Hi, addie-ga !

Like tehuti-ga I've found the Smooth Hound site very useful - I used
it myself when booking a world trip a couple of years ago.

http://www.smoothhound.co.uk

The only snag seemed to be that hotels with no availability didn't
bother to answer emails, but that may have sorted itself out by now.

http://www.s-h-systems.co.uk

is also a link to their site.

Also useful is:

http://www.avaweb.co.uk/northyorkshire

A very similar site to Smooth Hound can be found at Ai Tourism. Their
York page is at:

http://cgi.www.a1tourism.com/uk/york.html

An excellent site dedicated to sourcing B&Bs in Yorkshire is:

http://www.yorkshirebandb.co.uk

Since you are very busy I've trawled through the sites to find hotels
in and around York and summarised a selection of those which do not
seem to charge more than your budget during the high season. I've
noted when their pricing pages were last updated, so you can judge
whether they are likely to have had a price increase, and noted some
other details about them for you.

I've tried to pick a range, from guesthouses through to a Motel.

None of the hotels in this budget range have instant online
availability checks, they all require you to email or phone them
direct. I would suggest phoning, because of the temptation not to
reply to an email, when there is no availability.

I hope this gives you enough selection, and that you are able to find
somewhere pleasant and convenient for your friends.

Superb answer, well structured and in depth - I wish I had offered
more for this question but I didn't expect this calibre of answer, you
have truly excelled yourself and I will investigate the places
mentioned.

I have heard of the one in Shiptonthorpe, but it hadn't crossed my
mind in this instance.

Kindest Regards
Addie

I frequently stay in York. The going rate in modest hotels seems to
be £40 single, £60 double. If you look on smoothhound.co.uk, putting
in York, you will see some listed for less. However, this is the FROM
part of from-to prices, so I doubt you would get them in August.
Knaresborough and Harrogate are equally pricy. What about trying
Leeds? It's a little more than 26 miles, but connections should be
good.

Anyway, best of luck to you and other researchers in your search

If you really want to go budget, there is the youth hostel, or the
youth hotel, or a couple of other options:
