what is a cinch cable? it was supplied with a Topfield set-top box.

A chinch cable is commonly referred to as an "RCA cable" in the US. It
is used to transmit many different kinds of signal. You can read about
it in the Wikipedia:

Just to add to the link provided by vladimir, in UK we almost always
use the ?phono? term.
