This is my first time getting a broadband connection, in fact my first
computer and I do not know a lot about computers. I have searched the
net and read a lot about various providers but it is confusing. I am
mainly using the internet to download music(few songs a week),chat
with my friend(about 1-2 hours a day),send and receive e-mails(about
2-5 a day) and sometimes just simply surf for informations that I
need.I have been advised that a 512K connection is adequate. I do not
play internet games and download movies. I already have a phone
number. I am currently living in London(post code:E14 6BU). I would
like to know what are the things I should look for(if possible name of
the providers and/or packages) and what hardwares I have to get beside
my computer to get started.

As far as provided in London - I'm in the US so not much help there.
But, I get my broadband from the local cable company. They provide my
tv service.

I happen to also use the 512k connection. It works get. You can
always upgrade at no cost (for just the upgrade, you will pay more for
a faster connection). It done, the upgrading, at the providers site
without you have to buy any new equiment.

The only extra hardware you should need is a special type of modem.
Since you already have a phone number I would suggest you check if the
phone company you are using also provides broadband deals. Most phone
companies have customer service numbers so you can get help setting
everything up etc. I live in New Zealand so I'm not sure of the deals
you can get etc but your phone company should be able to help.
