Dear Ratso,
"Pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing provided 293,000 wage and
salary jobs in 2002. Pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing
establishments typically employ many workers. About 75 percent of this
industry?s jobs in 2002 were in establishments that employed 500 or
more workers [...]. Most jobs are in California, Illinois, Indiana,
New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania.
Under the new North American Industry Classification System (NAICS),
workers in research and development (R&D) establishments that are not
part of a manufacturing facility are included in a separate
industry?research and development in the physical, engineering, and
life sciences. However, due to the importance of R&D work to the
pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing industry, drug-related R&D
is discussed in this statement even though a large proportion of
pharmaceutical industry-related R&D workers are not included in the
employment data. "

Some historical figures:
In 1995, the pharmaceutical industry employed 218,000 people.

document).
In 1999, "over 209,000 people"

Research Subcommittee of the House Science Committee,

I hope this answered your question. Please contact me if you need any
further clarification on this answer before you rate it. My search
strategy has been to search for "pharmaceutical industry" and
"employed". |

I appreciate your response; it is quite helpful.
However, since your source mentions that pharmaceutical R & D
personnel are not included in that 293,000 figure, can you tell me how
many more people fall into that category (of being employed by
pharmaceuticals to conduct Research and Development)?
Also, do you know where I could find info about how many pharmacists
there are currently in the USA? (If I need to post a separate
question for this, I will. I'm new, and I'm not sure how this works.)
Thanks again.

Dear Ratso,
I am not sure why my clarification won't get through. I'll try again:
- It is difficult statistically to distinguish R&D staff (and in any
case, I have found no reliable statistics regarding the US disucssing
that), because they are classified under a handful of professions
(medical researchers, biological researchers, medical information
technologists, etc.), but not all of those who are classified in these
categories actually work in the pharmaceutical industry. So, I'm
sorry, but the data herewith given is the best that could be given.
As to your other question - it should be posted separately.
Thank you!
