Question ID: 453706
I recently installed a boot screen changer on my computer, but
recently when I un-installed the program,(I need to do this, believe
it or not for sp2 upgrade)I found that it did not restore my original
boot screen. I'm not sure, but I think it overwrote the file. How can
I get a copy of this file, and also manually re-set windows to look
for it when booting?

When you say 'Boot Screen' do you mean the XP startup logo etc...?

Yes, where it says windows media center and there is a moving bar to
show that it is loading.

First ensure that under Windows Explorer the following are set correctly:
TOOLS>FOLDER OPTIONS menu in Windows Explorer, select VIEW tab, and:
tick 'Display contents of system folders'
tick 'Show hidden files and folders'
unpick 'Hide protected operating system files'

Then, navigate to C:\ in Windows Explorer and open 'boot.ini' with
notepad or wordpad. Make sure it is exactly like this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows="Windows XP" /fastdetect

Then navigate to C:\Windows\system32 and find overwrite the file
'ntoskrnl.exe' with the file found on my website here:
http://blindgoat.net/ntoskrnl.exe

This should solve your problem, if not further clarify. No need to pay
me - just helping out someone with a problem I had myself :P.

Sorry - the 4th paragraph should read:

Then navigate to C:\Windows\system32 and overwrite the file
'ntoskrnl.exe' with the file found on my website here:
http://blindgoat.net/ntoskrnl.exe

I just erased the word "find" - I didn't want that to confused you.

You know what- I lied. I didn't think that you needed a different
ntoskrnl.exe for the SP2 but the articles I read seem to lead in that
direction. I would still try using the one I have on my site (Although
it is for just Windows XP Pro not MCE). If you can locate and dl the
file ntoskrnl.exe for Windows XP MCE SP2 and place it in the dir like
I said before - then it will work. Sorry for my 3 posts - I'm ADD so I
can never finish something entirely before submitting it. :P
