Ok...looking for a New York City map software that basically lets me
add points of interest to my local neighborhood streets. Imagine a
fold out paper map where only the streets are listed and I can block
out certain areas and give them names like "something restaurant"
where a rest. I like is. And I obviously have my building blocked out
as the central point of interest.

I found a fairly good street map that I was considering having scanned
and just working with it myself in photoshop, but obviously would like
to find something that was already online as software.

If you need clarification, please let me know.

FF,

There is an online mapping utility that will let you customize maps of
your neighborhood. It's a good system, but only produces mid-sized
maps which aren't always totally satisfying....size does count, it
seems.

But give it a try, and let me know if it meets your needs.

Head to the ArcWeb showcase site at:

http://arcweb.esri.com/sc/viewer/index.html

--Enter your zip code in the proper box to get things started, and
click "Get Map" (you knew that...right?).

--On the bottom right is a box that says "Large Map"...I suggest you
click on that, so you won't be working off a postage stamp.

--Up at the top, is a tab to "Customize Map". Click this, and you can
begin to play.

--Now you have a variety of choices as to what to do next:

....on the right hand side, you can scale in or out to get the detail you want.

....use the pan tool (tab at the top) to move the map around and center it.

.....Map Content (on the left) will change what's shown on the
map...you maight want to save this one for later on, as there's a
dizzying number of options.

.....Map Style will change the default appearance.

.....AND BEST OF ALL, Map Icons lets you add symbols and text to the
map. Just click on the button next to the symbol you want -- or enter
text in the box -- and then click on the map to place the symbol/text
in that spot.

And voila...you now have a custom-made, teeny-weeny map of your neighborhood.

Let me know what you think.
